I-65 Shutdown
Beginning June 1st and continuing through July 31st, a five-mile section of I-65 between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (near Jefferson Street) will be fully closed in both directions due to the I-65 Central Corridor project. This closure is part of an infrastructure improvement effort focused on replacing the I-65 bridges crossing Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds.
The current bridges were built in the late 1950s as part of the original construction of the interstate and have reached the end of their service life. These new bridges will ensure long-term reliability, with a service life of approximately 75 years. Additional improvements include reconstructed sidewalks and upgraded lighting under and around the bridges. By implementing a full shutdown rather than partial lane closures, construction will be more efficient, significantly reducing the overall project timeline.
Detours
Detours will route traffic to I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) for through travel around the west side of Louisville. Drivers heading to downtown Louisville will use the Jefferson Street exit from southbound I-65, while traffic leaving downtown can access northbound I-65 via East Liberty Street. To help accommodate additional traffic, some ramps along I-264 (Watterson Expressway) are being temporarily widened.
